Agitating shoot tip explants from 14-month-old field-grown plants of pawpaw cv. Pusa Nanha in an antibiotic solution (Cefotaxime at 50 mg litre-1 + Gentamycin at 100 mg litre-1 + Streptomycin at 50 mg litre-1) prior to culture on establishment medium significantly reduced problems of systemic bacterial contamination present in the tissue. On average 4-5 shootlets were proliferated during 6 subcultures on MS basal medium supplemented with 2.5 mg litre -1 kinetin + 0.2 mg litre-1 NAA. Rooting was best on half strength MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg litre-1 NAA.
